The exhibition is a dialogue between two painters: Kamrooz Aram (1978, Shiraz, Iran) and Giorgio Griffa (1936, Turin, Italy), whose work illustrates how abstract painting reverberates across time and space. For the opening, contemporary Italian poets Silvia Bre and Carmen Gallo will read a selection of poems chosen to reflect the themes of the exhibition.

Romaeuropa Festival and the American Academy in Rome present the Italian premiere of Field of Vision, a work for 36 percussionists by American composer Michael Gordon, Paul Fromm Resident in Composition at the American Academy in Rome, performed by Blow Up Percussion. Field of Vision is conceived as a spatial, three-dimensional sonic experience in which the music moves through space, immersing both performers and listeners in an almost meditative mode of perception.

“What makes us live longer, better, and happier but is visible only to a few, and inexplicable even to those few?” This modern Sphinx’s riddle has but one answer: research.

This is the third in a series of five lectures on Material Environments, hosted jointly by the American Academy in Rome and the British School at Rome over the academic year 2025–26. Through five evening lectures, speakers will present new research on environments of ancient and post-Classical Rome and Italy. Changing technologies of research provide new answers to questions about the experience and effect of landscape and climate. These lectures showcase the ways in which environmental considerations recast our study of the past.
